In this article the impact of Mullā Ṣadrā’s philosophical opinions concerning “existence” on his understanding of the Qur’anic verses is critically reviewed. To this end, all exegetical and philosophical books of Ṣadrā have been studied and the instances, in which he has – under the influence of the above opinions – inferred meanings other than the apparent meanings from the Qur’an’s verses, have been collected. Then, with reference to other verses, narrations, apparent meanings, Revelation occasions, content of the verses in question, and their evidences and, in view of the transmutation (istiḥīla) of the intellectual requirements of some of Ṣadrā’s interpretations, the validity of the aforementioned inferences were verified and the conclusion was drawn that from among the seven interpretations that Ṣadrā has presented under the influence of the above opinions, only one instance can be confirmed.

The issue of the Qur’anic reading (qira’at) has received much attention by the scholars of the Qur’an studies since long time ago, and many books have been written by them in this field.Nevertheless, of all the above-mentioned books only a few have been left to us. Yet, a small number of these books have been published, the subject of most of which are the “seven” or “ten” readings. In spite of the importance of research concerning a specific qāri (reciter of the Qur’an), little research has been done in this respect.Ḥasan al-Baṣrī is one of the pioneers of qirā’at among the fourteen reciters who particularly deserves to be studied. The present research is dedicated to his qirā’at from a specific point of view. Accordingly, this paper has gathered, categorized, and examined the instances attributed to him and the outcomes are presented to the reader. This paper is organized on the following four bases:1.Ḥasan al-Baṣrī’s masters and disciples.2. Sanad (chain of transmission) of his qirā’at.3.Deliberations on his qirā’at.4.Scholars’ opinions in this regard.

The tradition, “Majority of the people of Paradise are idiots” is a well-known tradition which has always been the talk of Muslims, particularly the mystics and Sufis. In this article, first the course of transmission of this tradition is traced back and displayed in the farīqayn (the two major Muslim sects) sources through searching into the Shī‘ite and Sunnī sources. Then, with the use of rules and criteria of ḥadīth studies and by examining the extant evidences, the sanad and the transmitters of the above tradition are critically reviewed and concluded that none of the chains of transmission of this tradition have been flawless. Further on, with reference to the viewpoints of exponents and traditionists, the content of this tradition is critically analyzed and, supposing that it has been originated from the Prophet (S.A.W.)’s fountain of Divine knowledge, it is attempted to present the true meanings of this tradition. In this research, some remarks are also made concerning the viewpoints of the mystics, who have found this tradition in agreement with their intuitive findings.

The name of laff wa-nashr was the product of an elaboration by the schoolmen of an originally exegetic term; the content of the figure included material extracted from the tradition of profane rhetoric; rejection of the Qur’anic shawāhid by post-scholastic theorists produced a figure which retained its exegetic name but which consisted of one variation of the profane figure, described (by the scholastics) as mufṣṣaal murattab. Interpreted thus, the equivalence laff wa-nashr: versus rapportati is valid. Like the Oriental figure, the European one was, too, a later refinement of a simple syntactical variation: in Classical rhetoric hyperbaton, under which had been originally subsumed both tmesis (separation) and subnexio (gloss). In both traditions badīʿ ornatus emerged triumphant.

The Shī‘as have made great benefits from referring to the Qur’an, Sunna, and intellect as evidence of their commitment to the school of Alhl al-Bayt (A.S.) and adherence to it. The verse of wilāyat is among the verses that the Shī‘as have referred to as evidence of the immediate Imamate of Amīr al-Mu‘minīn, Ali (A.S.). The Shī‘as’ referring to this verse as evidence is based on some premises, one of which is the revelation of the aforementioned verse in relation to his holiness. It is to be noted that the revelation occasions of some verses are greatly effective in understanding them to the extent that disregarding the revelation occasion would impair getting to know the purpose of the verse. On the other hand, the opponents of the Shī‘ite attitude toward the revelation occasion of aforementioned verse have raised some misconceptions. Among other things, they have stated that the transmitters of the tradition confirming the revelation of the above verse as to be about Imam Ali (A.S.) are all Shī‘ites, hence invalid! This article attempts to figure out the criterion for acceptance of this tradition through examining the Sunnī ḥadīth and rijālī (biographical) sources, to find out whether the transmitters’ being Shī‘ite is detrimental to their authenticity, and finally, to identify the transmitters of the tradition concerning the above-mentioned verse. Therefore, the research method used here is descriptive-analytical and based on certified Sunnī sources. According to the surveys made into the Sunnī sources, it is clarified that the criterion for accepting the tradition is neither the transmitters’ being Sunnī; nor their being Shī‘ite is detrimental to the authenticity of the tradition. Apart from this, several of the transmitters of the tradition on the revelation occasion of the aforementioned verse concerning Imam Ali (A.S.) are from among the Ṣaḥāba (companions of the Prophet) who are all regarded as just according to the generally accepted Sunnī sources and their traditions are to be accepted as reliable.

Verbal harmony of the verses is one of the fields of Qur’anic studies which plays a significant role in understanding the Qur’an. This discourse has been propounded by various titles since long time ago and has been open to debate by its proponents and opponents. Harmony can be sought for in the connection between parts of a verse, association of the verses with each other, and the conjunction among the chapters (sūras). The harmony in the verses of Sūra al-Jum‘a is a clear example of the aforementioned discourse, which is taken into consideration in this research paper.
